EnerPHit Plus 1960's Designer Home

Retrofit of a modernist architectural gem turns this home into a living space for the future. Winner of the 2023 Homebuilding & Renovating Awards for Best Green Home.

Ecospheric supported RDA Architects in London with the award-winning retrofit design of this 1960s house originally designed by modernist architect Michael Blackstock. The aim was to restore the property in keeping with the original design aesthetic, while delivering a contemporary, healthy and comfortable modern living space. The three storey property was designed in the ‘upside-down’ style common in the 1960s, with an open plan living space and terrace sitting above the bedrooms on the first floor and ground floor parking and utility area.

When our clients decided to retrofit the property, the house was suffering from damp and draughts and the condition of the reinforced concrete structure presented a challenge for the design. Ecospheric supported the energy modelling and Passivhaus design, facilitating the rejuvenation of this tired home into a bright and comfortable modern living space.

The project is certified as an EnerPHit Plus building by the Passivhaus Institute, which means that it generates renewable energy as well as being highly thermally efficient. It has been awarded Best Green Home by the Daily Telegraph Homebuilding and Renovating Awards. The project was a finalist for the 2023 UK Passivhaus Awards and 2023 British Homes Awards.
